We always feature LIVE music at our dances, and this month our band is The Mound City Slickers!
Dancing starts at 7:30 PM and goes until 10:00 PM, with a short break in the middle. All dances are taught before they are danced. Traditional square dancing is pretty easy to learn: you need to know your right from your left, you need to be able to walk, and that's about it. OK, there's more, like learning a few obscure names for some moves, but you'll pick it up pretty quickly. I'll probably show up around 7:00, so if you think you need some instruction before dancing, show up early and I'll see what I can teach you in ten minutes to put your mind at ease.
We start the evening with some easier dances and build complexity (a little, not that much) as the evening progresses, but you'd probably do fine if you show up late. You can show up with a partner, bring a group of people or come alone: you'll get to dance. We encourage people to change partners through the course of the evening, as this is social dancing, but that's hardly required if you aren't comfortable with that. Square dancing can feel like a real workout to some people, so come prepared! You might want to bring a water bottle with you, although beverages (and food) can be purchased right outside the dance at the Magnolia Cafe. Also, wear comfortable shoes (spike heels might look great, but they don't work that well for a square dance). $5 at the door, cash only.
