DIFFICULTY: Moderate due to length and elevation again, and crossing/fording creek NET ELEV. GAIN: around 1650 ft TOTAL DISTANCE: 8-10 miles Time to get there: ~75 min from Carpooling point Estimated hiking time: 6-7 hours with frequent stops Permit: NW Forest Pass per car The Gifford Pinchot National Forest’s Siouxon Roadless Area is part of the 1902 Yacolt Burn and the lush growth here is really a 100-year forest although much of it is younger than that because fires continued to erupt in the area until 1930 or so, when the Civilian Conservation Corps came in and built trails and firebreaks. This loop takes you to some of the main waterfalls of the Siouxon Basin along the undulating Siouxon Trail. Most visitors are entranced by the deep green and lush shadiness of this valley and the constant proximity to water. There is a log for crossing the Chinook Creek with shin deep water based on latest reports. After that we will contiue to hike the Wildcat Trail up to a view to the ribbon-like Wildcat Falls, again best viewed at times of high water. To close the loop, we will need to make the ford at the Siouxon at Wildcat Creek Crossing to return to the Siouxon Trail (total 8.2 miles). If that doesn't look feasible, we will have to return the way we came (total 10 miles) More Details at https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Siouxon_Creek_Hike CARPOOLING: We will meet at Gateway Transit Center at 7:30 am and carpool from there to trail-head. RT mileage is 100 miles; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $10. If you have a NW Forest pass, please bring it along. NO DOGS, please. What to bring: - Sturdy hiking boots/shoes - Layers of clothing including rain jacket (No Cotton please) - Hiking poles (never a bad idea) - Lunch, snacks and plenty of water - Always good idea to be prepared with 10 essentials* *Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page. - As a Meetup organizer, I'm an unpaid volunteer. While I always try to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone, by signing up for this event you assume full responsibility for your own health, safety, and well-being for its entire duration, including while traveling to and from both the meeting place and destination. - If there is a waiting list, I will pick additional people at my discretion. I reserve the right to remove anyone from my events if I'm concerned that their ability or fitness level will slow down the rest of the group.
