We will be going to Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail - located near Whitesburg KY. Suggest car poolers leave no later than 5pm on Friday from the Florence KY Super Walmart just off Houston Road, since the drive is about 4 hours to Whitesburg (dinner along the way). I'll be going down early on Friday to do a day hike if anyone else is interested (leaving by 8am Friday). Once you arrive on Friday, it is a very short distance (0.4 miles) to the Flamingo trail shelter for Friday night. On Saturday morning (or Friday night if we have time), we will stage a car at the Pound Gap VA end of the trail (15 miles). Then on Saturday, we will backpack about 8.5 miles and stay at the Adena Shelter (or use a hammock - Tent Space is very limited due to hillside - however there is another flat area about 0.2 mile further down the trail). The Adena shelter is split level and there is enough room for about 8 to 10 (cozy). On Sunday, we will backpack about 9.0 miles back to the eastern end of the trail at Pound Gap VA (first arrivals will go get the other car(s) and bring them back. We will stop for early dinner at the Pine Mtn Grill in Whitesburg KY. and be back in Florence KY around 8pm. Total distance is about 17 miles. This trail is difficult to strenuous in spots. WEATHER NOTE: If the weekend weather calls for hot/humid, I may postpone the trip. I will update this meetup notice with GPS coordinates for the Friday night parking lot and shelter, in case you need to arrive late at the shelter due to work. General Info: The Highland Section has 2 shelters (Flamingo is 0.4 miles from the western end parking lot, Adena is about halfway @ 8.5 miles). The 2-story shelters can accommodate about 12 people - or you can use a hammock. We will have to carry water in from the cars (0.4 miles) for Friday night and for Saturday hike). The Adena Shelter has a water supply 0.1 to 0.5 miles away (must filter/treat). Both shelters have privy. Both shelters have food hanging pole (must hang food, the area is known to be a black bear migration link). There is plenty of parking at the western end in a lot adjacent to US 119. Eastern end parking is limited and is behind a gas/food mart on US 23 in Pound Gap, VA right at the KY/VA state line (we will let the store know we are parking for the trail) Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail official website (http://www.pinemountaintrail.com/) Highland Section West to East Hike Plan (http://files.meetup.com/1049934/Pine%20Mtn%20Highland%20West%20to%20East%20Hike%20Plan.xlsx) Trail Features and Mileages (http://files.meetup.com/1049934/Highland%20Hike%20Mileages.xlsx) Detailed Highland Section Map (http://files.meetup.com/1049934/PMT_Highland_SectionMap2013.pdf) Sherpa Guides Info (http://www.sherpaguides.com/virginia/mountains/app_plateau/pine_mountain.html) NY Times Info (http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/travel/escapes/03pine.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0) BackpackCamp.com info (http://www.backpackcamp.com/PineMountainTrail.html) *****LOOK BELOW***** By signing up and/or participating in this event, you fully accept our liability waiver: https://www.meetup.com/CincinnatiBackpackers/pages/1036870/Cincinnati_Area_Backpackers_Meetup_Waiver/ TOTAL estimated cost per person: $0 if we don't buy firewood for Friday night or about $3 if we do - plus you should share gas cost with your driver if you carpool * Distance: This will likely be a total of 16 to 18 backpacking miles.
