Did you ever just want to follow a mountain stream into the wilderness to its source, and clambor over the rocks to explore its waterfalls, and swim (or at least dangle your toes) in the bracing clear water? Yeah, me too, all the time. That's why I'm heading up to the Wilson Creek Wilderness Area to do that very thing on North Harpers Creek, a tributary to Wilson Creek. This will be a five-mile hike, point-to-point, on a narrow wilderness trail rated as "most difficult" that passes three waterfalls along the way: Bard Falls (see photo) known for its smoothly carved rock formations; Chestnut Branch Falls (see photo) with its inviting swimming hole, and North Harpers Creek Falls at the end. The trail crosses and re-crosses Harpers Creek many times (I lost count around 15 last time I was there) as it ascends the narrow gorge, so be prepared to get wet! The trail itself is not particularly steep but the climb is steady, and the angle does increase towards the end of the hike. We will take our time, enjoy the falls as we come to them, and be glad we came. Dinner in Morganton on the way back. I recommend you wear something you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes, as the many stream crossings--not to mention the pools under the falls--make it very likely that at least part of you will wind up in the water at some point.
