I’m experimenting with calling these sessions Moving Mondays and not giving them specific themes, with the idea that this can give us more freedom to improvise according to who comes and what the music might inspire I like the word ‘moving’ because it has a double sense - the basic sense of movement (which is most of what we do in these sessions) but also the figurative sense of something that moves us, something that awakens our feelings and emotions - all parts of the role of music our word music comes from the Muses - the 9 ancient Greek deities who were the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts; considered to be the source of the knowledge embodied in poetry, songs, and myths; it’s a lovely idea - that music (including poetry as well as what we understand today as music) embodies cultural knowledge, and that as we're moved by music, we're also receiving this knowledge if we're open to it (and that’s how it’s been in my life, the course of which changed completely because of hearing 1 piece of music when I was 16) so that’s the broad territory I hope we can explore - moving together, being inspired by music and poetry, and by each other, and thereby deepening our movement and being moved deeper emotionally; and, in the spirit of poetry and song, sometimes letting our voices move as well general the studio: Mufit Aytekin Atolye, Alara İş Merkezi, Osmanlı sokak no:11/3, kat. 1, (Kazancı Yokuşu), Gümüşsuyu Mahallesi, Taksim/Gümüşsuyu, Istanbul (3 minutes walk from Taksim: turn sharp downhill past the Garanti Bank next to the Marmara Hotel and it’s just before the road turns to the right past the small mosque) You can enter the space from 7pm. Please be ready to move when the session is set to start though you can still join if you arrive late. We’ll post themes on Facebook as we go along but all the sessions are about Free Dancing; the themes are to help focus the sessions on different aspects and principles of movement and different music to go with; how you interpret them is up to you. The sessions all complement each other. What to bring? Not much; please arrive on time or early as we’ll try to start on time; normally we dance barefoot, but if you prefer to wear light dance shoes (not outdoor shoes) that’s fine, please wear comfortable clothes you can move freely in; a water bottle and a towel are good ideas… Nick Hobbs FreedomDance Anadolu Facebook: FreedomDance Anadolu & Slow Yoga coming sessions & workshops: Istanbul Monday, March 11th, 7:15-9:30pm at Müfit Aytekin Atölye, Gümüşsuyu-Taksim.
