Historically, the BWW’s Spring Literature Series has used its comparatively shorter timeframe to tackle renowned novellas by influential authors like James Baldwin, Clarice Lispector and Italo Calvino. For the 2019 Spring Series, we are changing things up a bit: at 348 pages, and with a publication date of 2018, Belfast-born author Anna Burns’ “Milkman” is neither a novella, nor a canonized work of 20th century fiction. Winner of the 2018 Man Booker Prize for Fiction, which made Burns the first Northern Irish writer to have won the award, “Milkman” is an experimental novel set in an unnamed city, narrated by an unnamed girl (referred to in the novel to only as “middle child”) who finds herself the object of a local paramilitary figure’s intense and persistent affection. The Booker’s chair of judges, Kwame Anthony Appiah, said of the book, “None of (the judges) has ever read anything like it before”, going on to say that “Burns’s utterly distinctive voice challenges conventional thinking and form in surprising and immersive prose”. Despite its recent publication date, “Milkman” is clearly just the type of book for which the BWW Lit. Series was formed, and will undoubtedly foster the same gripping conversations and palpable passion for fiction that have become one of this group’s defining characteristic. Come join us, every Tuesday in May, as we embark on the rare journey of discussing a book written by someone who’s not dead yet!
