Come walk the length of the Jonas Ridge trail, check out the views and spring bloom. I'm hoping this date will be perfect for lady slippers, sandy myrtle, flame azaleas, and "punk tatem" rhododendron. We will take several side trails to get views from both sides of the ridge, one being a favorite Celestial Point where you can see all the way down the gorge. Pictured here is a view from the end of the trail before it descends quickly to the foot of Sitting Bear Rock, a 50 ft monolithic rock that from some direction looks like a bear sitting on its haunches. I consider this a pretty easy hike along the ridge. There is an uphill pull at the beginning and a steep butt slide at the end to get to Sitting Bear. We'll stop for lunch at a nice campsite with a view of Brown Mountain overlook on 181. Packing a lunch would be a good idea. Parking is at a premium at this trail head so I am asking you to meet at the closed convenience store on 181 right before you get to Brown Mountain Beach Road. There is a vacant parking area there that is used by many for carpooling. The trailhead is in Gingercake Acres at the end of Grandview Ext. After hiking I invite you to come by Robin's Nest for a relaxing cookout. Bring something for the grill and your favorite beverage. If you are want to do this and would like to leave your car at my place and food in the fridge, be at 1884 Fonta Flora Dr Nebo by 9:15 AM.
