Cheraw State Park in Cheraw, South Carolina is a wonderful little jewel that offers camping, picniking, hiking, and kayaking opportunities. The lake itself is formed by a small dam and backs up into a cypress swamp that is well worth a visit. The last time we were there we saw nesting ospreys, watched the parents hunt for fish, and heard the fledglings calling to them from their nests. Kayaks and canoes are available for rent, so you don't have to bring your own. You WILL, however, have to bring food and drink. I'll see about reserving a covered area with tables and a grill for the picnic. Kayak and canoe rentals are $30 for the day, $10 an hour. As for hiking, there is a trail which runs about four and a half miles, with an option for a shorter loop (just under two miles as I recall).
