Hike a shelter dog! What can be better? Hike a Houlagans' Rest rescue dog, while visiting Powhatan State Park (http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/powhatan.shtml#general_information), in the northwest corner of Powhatan County on the historic James River! After enjoying a 2 mile hike, you will have an opportunity to visit with your new friend. This is NOT an obedience class, but an exercise and give-some-love event. This human interaction has resulted in several dogs being adopted! The minimum age for a handler is 16. Younger children may accompany an adult and share in the fun of playing with the dogs. SPECIAL NOTE: If your plans change and you do not show up without notification, a dog will be brought to the park and not get to hike. You must keep your RSVP up to date. I will send out an email with my cell phone number Friday night. Thank you for your consideration. DIRECTIONS: The official address of this new park is 4616 Powhatan State Park Road. Please, PLEASE check the location in Google, before you leave. A lot of people get lost, when they depend on their GPS. Directions are also on the park website: POWHATAN STATE PARK (http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/powhatan.shtml#general_information) There is a $4 parking fee unless you already have a VA State Park annual pass. Please have exact change or check, the attendant may not be on duty. Be sure to get the parking pass from the yellow box just past the entrance contact station and hang it on your mirror. Please note this is NOT Pocahontas State Park. BRING: Completed volunteer forms (http://houlagansrest.com/forms/Houlagan%20application.pdf) (5 pages), which includes a statement that you have not been convicted of animal cruelty. Repeat hikers do NOT need to complete the forms again. If possible, please complete them in advance. If you do forget them, Houlagans' Rest personnel will have extra forms.
