This is a rare event, an opportunity to explore Fresh Kills Park, before it officially opens. This third party meetup was suggested by one of our members. For those of you that are not aware, Freshkills Park is a public park being built atop of a landfill reclamation project in Staten Island. When completed, the park will be three times the size of Central Park and the 2nd largest park in NYC. Though its not set to fully open until 2035 or 2037. Occasionally, when the park hosted a limited open, only guided tours or activities were available. June 30th will be the first time in the park's history that the park will have open hours so patrons can explore the park as much as they'd like. More than six miles of roads and trails will be accessible for that day only. Bikes will be available to rent (if you don't want to bring your own) for free at the event entrance. This is a rare opportunity as you can see the park being built right in front of you eyes and the local wildlife who are already claiming it. Its unknown when park services will have another open hours for the park, so come see it while you can. Some fun facts about Freshkills Park: at one point, it was the world's largest landfill. At the peak of its operation, 650 tons of garbage was added to the landfill every day! Want to learn more about Freshkills Park? Staff and volunteers will be on site to answer any questions about the park that you may have.
