I really want to go back to Cumbres Pass CDT but it's a little early so we're gonna take advantage of some lower elevation hikes at the foot of the San Juan's in the Chama River Basin. These are the headwaters of the Chama River and it's very lush with at least two falls. I went to the area in 2015 on a meetup to Pagosa Springs. I only spent a couple of hours there and loved it. A backpacking trip is the best way to really check out the area. We'll stay in the basin to make our camp. It will probably be freezing overnight so make sure you plan accordingly. Please also hang your food or bring a bear canister. There are water sources but you MUST filter water as there are cattle that graze in the basin. The trip is 3.5 hours+ to the trailhead from Albuquerque. You may want to stay overnight on Friday. The meetup officially starts at the trailhead Saturday morning at 11am.
