About

Hi. If you are using the Meetup mobile app on your phone, look down a few lines below and tap the red-colored "Read more" to expand the description. TAP THIS --------- If you are using a computer or laptop/notebook, then you should be fine. Okay, everybody should now be able to see the full description on their screen. Reminder for everyone: If Meetup sends too many emails, then look at the bottom of their email and click Unsubscribe or Manage your settings or account page. Recommended for anyone new to this group or volunteering for the first time: https://www.meetup.com/SoCalVolunteers/events/154414682 ____________________ Preface: To be honest, they probably don't "need" additional volunteers. Every Saturday, they usually have 1 - 2 groups (such as church groups) help on a regular basis...and more likely than not, they probably have enough people. But if anybody lives nearby and really wants to help, feel free to continue reading. ____________________ Hi. Would anyone want to attend this event and help host? Hosting isn't hard. It involves being a point of contact in case others sign up and want to meet & volunteer together. If your plans/availability change, and you can't attend anymore, that's fine, just let us know and maybe someone else can step up to host, but if not, it's okay and we can cancel this meetup. ____________________ I try to spread the word about volunteer opportunities and raise awareness about non-profits/charities that do good work. This event is from Mary's Kitchen. http://maryskitchen.org/about - Meals are provided everyday to the community (e.g. homeless, people in need, etc.). Volunteers on Saturday morning help with tasks such as cooking breakfast, serving food, organizing the food pantry, making sack lunches, food or clothing distribution, etc. ____________________ They get pretty full & busy on Saturdays. I could be wrong, but various church groups help on different Saturdays. The few times I went, they were cool with new people showing up. However, I've also seen a few times, they turned away volunteers b/c they had enough people. For example, a few high school kids arrived around 9am or so, and the kitchen was full with other volunteers and they weren't part of the church group, so one person actually told the kids to go home. Each Saturday might differ. One group might welcome new volunteers, while another group might be less warm and friendly. When I went, I arrived early (before it got crowded), and nobody kicked me out...so my suggestion is to go early...such as 7:30 am. ____________________ This is automatically posted a few times in this group. If anyone wants to help on a different Saturday, just lmk and I can add it to the calendar and maybe others can join you. ____________________ Personally, I've just showed up, but if anyone wants to check in advance before going, feel free to check with Mary's Kitchen via http://maryskitchen.org/Volunteer or Call them at 714-633-0444 and ask for Gloria Seuss, Natalie, or Patrick or Message them on their FB page - https://www.facebook.com/MarysKitchenoc or Check for events at https://www.facebook.com/pg/Marys-Kitchen-Project-721250091304970/events ____________________ Photos: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1856848477758520 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.552382411538473 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.463094470467268 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.462534703856578 http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.462257320550983 http://maryskitchen.org/gallery - Videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU4FPfOee2E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_t1o-JRyU0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3xSFgilstU ____________________ Mary's Kitchen isn't visible from the street. It's at the end of the street (cul-de-sac). https://goo.gl/maps/bs2mM8x2Uh82 The driveway entrance is on the left. Their parking lot sometimes has room, but if the fence/gate is closed, parking is available on the street (Struck Ave). If you see people standing/sitting at the sidewalk or grass area nearby, then that's normal. They are waiting for the breakfast to start. After parking, look for a driveway entrance and behind the gate/fence, the soup kitchen should be visible. Walk toward the kitchen. Look for a side door (red), next to the ramp and a light blue wall with "Mary's Kitchen" in white paint - https://www.meetup.com/SoCalVolunteers/photos/29604036/477859951 After entering the door, on the right side, sign in and get a name tag. A few people (from the other group) should be in the kitchen. Let them know you're there to volunteer and their group leader should hopefully find something for you to help with (e.g. chop veggies, wash dishes, make sandwiches, organize the food donations or pantry, etc.). If by chance they are unfriendly and cold, then sorry about that. If anyone decides to go, hopefully you have a positive experience. Thank you for helping. Cheers.
