A review of the best waterfall-swimming hole hikes in Virginia listed this short hike in the Saint Mary's Wilderness off the Blue Ridge Parkway as number one. Join your James River Hiker friends as we take a day trip to find out. The hike is easy: a 4.4-mile out-and-back trek with two swimming holes, one .3 miles before the waterfall and of course the waterfall itself. Here's the review of the top five waterfall-swimming hole hikes: And here's a more detailed look at the hike we'll do: • This shouldn't be your first mountain hike: While the Saint Mary's Falls Hike is an easy hike with only 300 feet of elevation gain, it's still in the mountains. Walking these trails requires you to be surefooted and careful. Hikers falling is a common occurrence. You should have mountain-hiking experience to tackle this hike with us. If you're new to the event host, he reserves the right to inquire about your hiking experience and subsequently admit or exclude you from this hike as he sees fit. • You'll get thirsty. You'll get hungry. You'll get wet. Bring plenty of water to drink as well as sandals or Crocs to wade through it. Add a towel. Bring snacks to keep your energy level up, and some light lunch for our scenic, TBD mid-hike stop. • The sun will be out. Bugs, too. The weather forecast for the nearest town, Steeles Tavern, calls for a clear, bright day with a late afternoon high of 81º. Bring sunscreen. The bug forecast calls for gnats, mosquitoes, and ticks. Bring bug spray or lotion. • You can ride. Or you can drive. If you prefer to ride, bring $12 for your driver. If you plan to skip our restaurant stop on the return – Blue Mountain Brewery or Devil's Backbone Brewery, depending on which has the better pizza. Does anyone know? – you may need to drive yourself. • Meeting us at the trailhead? No later than 8:30 a.m. – and don't make us wait for you; we James River Hikers are an impatient lot – be at the gravel parking area off St. Mary's Rd. More specific directions will come in the final-word email the day before. The parking lot's GPS coordinates are 37.91163, -79.08680 • Important to know: While your event host is providing a framework for your MeetUp hiking experience, you are responsible for your own safety and well-being.
