PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION BELOW: We'll kayak the Main Branch of the Au Sable River on Saturday(September 8) while staying at a B&B in the vicinity of Grayling. The B&B has a 5/5 rating on TripAdvisor reviews. The B&B name and directions will be given to trip participants once confirmed. The map does not point to the B&B! We'll meet at the B&B on Friday. For those arriving early enough, there are many potential outdoor activities(see below) to participate in. After breakfast on Saturday, we'll kayak the main branch of the Au Sable River. You can bring your own kayak/canoe or rent from the B&B. Time on the river will be about 5-1/2 hrs. We'll make a few stops to stretch, swim/wade in the river and to eat lunch/snacks. An earlier take-out(after about 4 hours) can likely be arranged for those wanting less time on the river. We'll check out of the B&B after breakfast on Sunday and participate in additional outdoor activities before heading home. The Friday and Sunday activities will be organized as the trip approaches. This plan may be modified slightly due to weather, river conditions, etc. at the time of the trip. Once confirmed(see below), the trip goes regardless of weather. The B&B cost is about $230 per room for the weekend. Half that($115) if you are willing to share a room and a roommate is available. I need to approve everyone who goes. This cost includes two nights lodging(Friday and Saturday) plus two breakfasts(Saturday and Sunday). The trip size is 4 to 6 people depending on if there is one or two people per room. NOTE: Per B&B rules, pets and smoking are prohibited on the B&B grounds. RESERVATIONS: When you sign up, you will go on the waitlist. I will select the people going and move them from the Waitlist to the Going List. The trip will confirm by August 17(sooner if the trip fills). A minimum $100 deposit(full payment is ok!) is required to hold your spot. Unused rooms will be returned to the B&B by 3pm Friday August 16(or I will need to pay for them). Once on the going list and the trip confirms, you are committed to paying(whether you go or not) unless I can find somebody to take your place. ONCE CONFIRMED, THE TRIP GOES REGARDLESS OF WEATHER!!! ADDITIONAL COSTS THAT MAY APPLY: - Kayak rental(must be from the B&B): $35 for the 5-1/2 hour trip. - Private boat shuttle(if you bring your own boat): $10 per boat. This is included if you are renting. We will not be spotting cars. - Lunch/Snacks: Lunch will be on the river. You will need to bring your own lunch, snacks and beverages. - Dinners: We will be going to local restaurants for dinners. Kayaking Difficulty: Moderate - Although not difficult, you will need to be able to paddle for the duration. You cannot float down the river. Expect the usual tight spots and riffles that occasionally occur on a river such as this. Please note - the following applies to all group paddling events: - You must be able to swim. You must be comfortable in water over your head. - A PFD must be worn at all times while paddling. - No alcohol on the river. - No flotillas (tying boats together and floating down the river). Potential activities for Friday and/or Sunday afternoon: - More kayaking(possibly added cost) - possibly on the fabled South Branch of the Au Sable through the Mason Tract. Our B&B is not licensed to operate on the South Branch, so we would need to shuttle cars and/or work with a canoe/kayak livery in that area. - Hiking the Mason Tract(about 15 minutes from Grayling), - Exploring the Au Sable trail, Old Growth Forest and Logging exhibits in Hartwick Pines State Park(about 15 minutes from Grayling). - Hiking part of the Jordan River Pathway (about 45 minutes from Grayling) - Hiking part of the Manistee River Trail (about 1-1/2 hours from Grayling). - Mountain biking at Glacial Hills near Bellaire(about 1 hour from Grayling.
