This event will be this group's first attendance at a Civil War reenactment. This will be the largest civil war reenactment of the year in the entire country with over 3,000 reenactors. The Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864 was one of the last major Confederate victories in the Shenandoah Valley and was the only instance in American history where a student body—the VMI Corps of Cadets—participated in a pitched battle. THIS IS A MUST SEE EVENT! It takes place on the actual battlefield, which is currently a State Historical Park. This will be 155th anniversary of the battle. This event occurs every year, the 5-year anniversary are always the biggest. Note some reenactments only occur every 5 years. I will be attending this event as a reenactor and will meet the group at the entrance. The reenactment charges a $10 fee per person for this event, which is payable at the event directly. Note this fee helps to preserve the battlefield. This meetup group does not charge any fees. We will tour the Union camp, Confederate camp, sutler's row (stores), and part of the actual battlefield. The approximate walking distance is 2 to 3 miles. The tour will be from 10am to 12:30pm. The approximate time of the battle is 2:30pm. The event is open to 5:00pm. This event is advertised for two days. Each day will have pretty much the same activities, thus there is little to gain in attending both days. If you plan to arrive later than 10:00am, please leave a comment or send a message. Note the timing of this event is subject to change. The time of the battle is often changed for no reason at all or due to weather. If the times are changed, I will notify the group. No matter what happens, the reenactment is always open and I will make time for this group. This event is good for kids, though there is walking involved and you are open to the elements. Weather Policy: This event will be canceled if the Reenactment Organizers cancels the event. Other Policies of Reenactment Organizers: No pets are allowed at this event with the exception of service animals. In the interest of public security, no backpacks will be allowed on the grounds during the reenactment weekend. There are concession stands available on-site or bagged lunches are allowed.
